Puzzled by thrums? Learn the ancient art of thrumming as we work our way through thrummed slippers or mittens, certain to be the warmest slippers or mitts you’ll ever knit! We’ll cover how to properly make thrums, how to place and knit with them, read a thrum chart, and discuss the history of this Canadian technique!


Materials Needed ~ Thrummed Slippers or Mittens

• 220 yards aran weight yarn (no fuzzy fibers, please)
• 1 Braid (4oz) roving in contrasting shade
• Size US 8 (5mm) DPNs, or 2 16” circulars, or 30” circular for magic loop if preferred
• Stitch markers
• Scissors
• Tape measure
• Waste yarn
• Tapestry needle
• Post-It notes
• Copy of pattern will be provided


Homework ~ Thrummed Slippers or Mittens

For mittens using Long Tail or German Twisted CO, CO 36 sts with aran weight yarn. Join into round being careful not to twist sts, place marker for beginning of round.
Work [k2, p2] for 15 rounds or 2.5”.  For slippers homework is pending and will be provided closer to departure since there are multiple pattern options that will be given.
